VIDEO: PETA Calls Out Burberry’s Daniel Lee at ‘Vogue’ Event Over Use of Cruel Cashmere
London – Moments ago, PETA supporters descended on Vogue’s “Conversations” series at Lightroom, disrupting the talk of Burberry Chief Creative Officer Daniel Lee to highlight the rampant cruelty inherent in the cashmere industry. The animal defenders held signs that read, “Burberry: Cashmere Is Bloody Cruel!” and “Burberry: Animals Are Not Clothing” while shouting, “Daniel Lee: Cashmere is torture for goats! Do the right thing and drop it from your Burberry collections!”, before being hauled away by security.
Footage of the disruption is available here.
“Every fiber of a cashmere coat or scarf was torn from a terrified goat who screamed in agony as their hair was ripped out over and over again,” says PETA Senior Campaigns Manager Kate Werner. “PETA is calling on Daniel Lee to ditch cashmere from his designs, and see that cashmere is banned from all of Burberry’s products in favour of cosy and luxurious vegan options that leave animals in peace.”
Goats are social animals who are happiest in the company of others and can become depressed if they’re separated or isolated from their companions. A PETA Asia investigation into cashmere operations in Mongolia – including one supplier with ties to Burberry – revealed goats screaming in pain and fear as workers pinned them down by their legs and horns and ripped out their hair, sometimes tearing off pieces of their skin and leaving them with bleeding wounds; and bodies of dead goats scattered on site, including kid goats who likely died from extreme cold and hunger. Investigators also witnessed a herder using an unsterilised knife to cut open kid goats’ scrotums and pull out their testicles with his bare hands – all without pain relief.
PETA – whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to wear” – opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETA.org.uk or follow PETA on Facebook, X, TikTok, or Instagram.
