Staffordshire Woman Among Activists Taking Part in Pamplona ‘Running of the Dinosaurs’ Protest

Staffordshire – Today, armed with a sign reading “Bullfighting Is Prehistoric” and dressed in a dinosaur costume, 22-year-old Katya Sargeant from Staffordshire joined dozens of supporters of PETA and Spanish animal protection group AnimaNaturalis at the Plaza Consistorial in Pamplona, Spain, to protest the Festival of San Fermín’s infamous Running of the Bulls. Following the same route as the cruel event, in which 42 bulls will be chased through the streets to the bullring, where they’ll be killed, the group of activists called for the festival to reinvent itself by featuring fun, non-violent activities instead.

“It’s 2022, not the Mesozoic Era, and today, we understand that all animals can suffer and feel pain,” says Sargeant. “This cruel, archaic event should go the way of the dinosaurs, which is why I ran through the streets calling on Pamplona’s mayor to take action and relegate this bloodbath to the history books, where it belongs.”

More than 125 Spanish towns and cities have rejected the torment and butchering of bulls for entertainment, and bullfighting has seen a 42% decrease in Spain since 2019. But at festivals like San Fermín, bulls are still subjected to confusion and terror and risk injury from crashing into barriers and walls, falling and breaking their legs, or colliding with each other. In 2021, PETA offered Pamplona’s mayor €298,000 to cancel the annual Running of the Bulls – an offer that still stands.
