PETA Urges Newcastle Eatery to ‘Give a Hoot’ about Birds

Newcastle – Following reports the UK’s third Hooters restaurant – known for its iconic owl logo “Hootie” and chicken-wing loaded menu – is opening in Newcastle, PETA has rushed a letter to the UK General Manager, Julian Mills, urging him to ‘give a hoot about birds’ and serve vegan wings instead.

In the letter (available here), the animal protection group points out that when it comes to the capacity to feel pain and suffer, an owl is no different from a chicken or a human. Yet while owls are protected, chickens raised for their flesh are routinely fed antibiotics and bred to grow so large over such a short period of time that their legs often collapse under their own bodyweight. At abattoirs, they’re shackled upside down, their throats are slit, and they’re scalded in defeathering tanks – sometimes while still conscious.

“[V]egan wings hurt no one, aren’t tangled up in the ever-more-concerning bird flu outbreak, and are better for the planet,” writes PETA’s Vice President of Vegan Corporate Project Dawns Carr. “Plus, they can be endorsed and promoted by Hootie without making him seem like a sociopath who delights in the deaths of his fellow feathered friends.”

A new PETA video shows the horrified reactions from Londoners when they learn that the free samples of wings they’re eating aren’t from chickens but from “owls”. The spot urges anyone horrified at the thought of eating owls’ wings needs to extend that compassion to all animals and go vegan.

Every person who goes vegan spares nearly 200 animals a year daily suffering and a terrifying death. PETA’s free vegan starter kit can help anyone ready to make the switch.

PETA – whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat” – points out that Every Animal Is Someone and offers free Empathy Kits. For more information, please visit PETA.org.uk or follow PETA on FacebookX, TikTok, or Instagram.
