MEGHAN MARKLE’S BIRTHDAY GIFT FROM PETA: A LUXURY (VEGAN!) LEATHER BAG
Group Sends Duchess of Sussex Chic, Cruelty-Free Alexandra K Handbag
London – In honour of Meghan Markle’s birthday on 4 August, PETA is sending the new Duchess of Sussex a beautiful burgundy vegan leather handbag from sustainable brand Alexandra K to add to her famously chic wardrobe. PETA chose the gift knowing how much the Duchess loves vegan leather and to point out that cruelty-free materials are far kinder to animals and the environment.
The bag is made from plastic-free, recyclable Freedom Leather, a material which is highly durable, stain-resistant, and hypoallergenic – and also better for the environment than animal-derived leather.
“This bag suits Meghan Markle’s fashion sensibility and eco- and animal-friendly attitudes to a T,” says PETA Director Elisa Allen. “PETA hopes the gift will encourage the royal family and its fans alike to embrace compassionate brands like Alexandra K and to steer clear of cruelly obtained animal skins.”
PETA – whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to wear” – notes that cows killed for leather endure castration, branding, tail-docking, and dehorning, all without painkillers, before being skinned and dismembered, sometimes while they’re still alive. In addition, the leather industry has a devastating impact on the Earth, from the carbon emissions produced by raising livestock to the toxic tanneries that pollute nearby water supplies and expose workers to excessive amounts of chemicals, including arsenic.
PETA’s previous notable birthday gifts include a vegan wool coat for the Duchess of Cambridge and a pair of faux-leather shoes for Prime Minister Theresa May.
