‘It’d Be a Really Pig Deal!’ PETA Urges THE PIG to Stop Feeding Its Namesake to Guests
Bath – Today, PETA sent a letter (available here) to THE PIG Chief Executive Tom Ross offering up a surefire way for the hotel company to reduce its impact on the environment – one of its professed goals – and show true appreciation of pigs: removing the animal’s flesh from its menus and embracing sustainable, farm-to-table vegan fare, including savoury mushrooms.
“It’s disturbing that the very animals you acknowledge as ‘sociable’ and ‘down-to-earth’ are reduced to mouthfuls of flesh in your restaurants,” writes PETA Director of Vegan Corporate Projects Dawn Carr. “No pig goes to their death willingly – and the violent, bloody reality of the abattoir is not something you’d want in customers’ minds as they set down to dine at THE PIG.”
Harrowing footage from UK farms, including those self-described as “humane” or audited under the Red Tractor label, exposes rampant cruelty to pigs, cows, chickens, and other animals. In addition to subjecting animals to pain and suffering, animal agriculture is also a leading cause of environmental degradation.
“THE PIG has a golden opportunity to lead the way in creating a kinder and more sustainable future for hospitality by removing pigs (and other animals, while you’re at it) from your menus,” concludes Carr. “Better for the planet, better for the sociable pigs, and more enjoyable for your guests – it’d be a really pig deal!”
PETA – whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat” – opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETA.org.uk or follow the group on Facebook, X, TikTok, or Instagram.
