Beleaguered ‘Bird’ Sets Sights on Local KFC to Protest Farming and Slaughter Abuses

Wroclaw – Bound to a wheelchair and repeatedly crossing the road in front of a local KFC, an activist in a giant chicken costume will lead a protest against KFC suppliers’ abusive treatment of chickens. Activists will pass out leaflets and hold signs that proclaim, “KFC Tortures Chickens”. One activist will wear a body screen TV showing shocking undercover video footage of chickens in factory farms and slaughterhouses:

What is done to chickens would be illegal in most countries if it were done to dogs or cats. An undercover investigation at a US slaughterhouse that supplies chickens to KFC revealed workers kicking, throwing and stomping on live birds. And in another recent investigation, at a slaughterhouse operated by KFC’s number one supplier, Tyson Foods, PETA US caught video footage of workers ripping conscious chickens’ heads off, slaughter machinery systematically mutilating chickens and thousands of birds being scalded to death after entering the scalding tank while completely conscious.

KFC’s suppliers in the UK are no better. The Sunday Mirror led a report on an investigation into a UK KFC supplier with the headline “Distressed and Dying in a Cramped Shed … Nobody Does Chicken Like KFC”, showing abuses similar to those found at KFC suppliers all over the world, including in Germany, India and Australia.

PETA attempted to work with Yum! Brands executives prior to launching its “Kentucky Fried Cruelty” Campaign, but despite assurances made long ago by Senior Vice President Jonathan Blum that KFC would “raise the bar” on animal welfare, the company refuses to eliminate the worst abuses. In its international campaign against KFC, PETA has enlisted the support of Nobel Peace Prize winner His Holiness the Dalai Lama, comedian Richard Pryor, rock icons Sir Paul McCartney and Chrissie Hynde, actors Pamela Anderson and Bea Arthur and bands Ash, the Black Eyed Peas and The Darkness.

“KFC has the ability to stop this cruelty today, simply by implementing the changes recommended by its own advisors”,” says PETA Campaign Coordinator Andrew Butler. “While KFC drags its feet, chickens continue to suffer unnecessarily.”
