CARDIFF UNIVERSITY SNAGS SPOT ON ‘MOST VEGAN-FRIENDLY UNIVERSITIES’ LIST
PETA Expands List of Universities Offering the Best On-Campus Vegan Food Options
Cardiff – As more students than ever before are going vegan, PETA has expanded its list of the Most Vegan-Friendly Universities in the UK. Move over, meat – now, one-third of UK universities have vegan or vegetarian cafés, there are plant-based hospitality catering options and Vegan Wednesdays, and there’s even a vegan graduation!
The animal rights group has selected 31 universities based on the availability of plant-based food options on campus and their initiatives to promote vegan eating. And Cardiff University earned a spot on the list for leading the way with its plant-based options. In the main restaurant on campus, over half the menu is vegan, with tantalising dishes like smoked tofu tortillas and avocado macaroni cheese. On-campus cafés have vegan sandwiches, sushi, soups, sweet and savoury pastries, cakes, and milk. Popular vegan takeover nights are also held at The Taf pub in the students’ union.
“Students in the UK are going vegan in huge numbers, and it’s great to see universities joining the revolution,” says PETA Director Elisa Allen. “PETA commends Cardiff University for offering healthy and delicious vegan food options that everyone can enjoy.”
PETA – whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat” – notes that in addition to sparing nearly 200 animals a year a violent and terrifying death, every person who goes vegan reduces his or her chances of suffering from heart disease, diabetes, strokes, obesity, cancer, and numerous other ailments. Vegans also have significantly lower carbon footprints than meat-eaters do, as animal agriculture is a major producer of the greenhouse-gas emissions that cause climate change.
