Breaking: PETA ‘Carrots’ Crash NFU Conference in Push for Plant Farming
London – Moments ago, a pair of PETA supporters disguised as carrots interrupted the opening session of the National Farmers’ Union Conference with a banner declaring, “Root for the Planet! Go Vegan” The action is part of PETA’s campaign urging the governments of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland to subsidise plant-based farming instead of supporting the environmentally disastrous and violent meat, egg, and dairy industries. The animal allies brought the farming forum to a standstill as they interrupted NFU President Tom Bradshaw’s opening speech and called for farmers to stop farming animals and switch to kind, sustainable plant farming.
Footage of the disruption is available here.
“The violence of farming animals belongs in the past. It gobbles up precious resources, spews out methane that’s destroying the planet, and confines, mutilates and kills billions of non-consenting animals,” says PETA Vice President of Vegan Corporate Projects Dawn Carr. “PETA urges governments to help farmers and us all by redirecting funds toward life-giving horticulture, arable and other plant-based farming methods, and for everyone to help save animals and the planet by going vegan.”
Animal agriculture is a leading cause of environmental destruction, as it requires massive amounts of land, food, energy, and water and emits huge quantities of greenhouse gases. The United Nations warns that animal agriculture subsidies are fueling the climate catastrophe and encourages a global shift towards vegan eating to combat the worst effects of climate change.
Household consumption of animal-derived foods is declining across the UK, and Steve Reed has stated that UK animal farming will be reduced, and people will be encouraged to eat less meat. Despite this, the number of intensive animal farms in the UK continues to grow, and the government has said that they plan to allow larger factory farms, where some of the worst animal suffering occurs. Over 1 billion are killed in abattoirs each year – instead of food for humans.
Each person who goes vegan spares nearly 200 animals every year, dramatically shrinks their carbon footprint and slashes their risk of suffering from cancer, heart disease, strokes, diabetes, and obesity. PETA’s free vegan starter kit can help those looking to make the switch.
PETA – whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat” – points out that Every Animal Is Someone and offers free Empathy Kits. For more information, please visit PETA.org.uk or follow PETA on Facebook, X, TikTok, or Instagram.
