ALICIA SILVERSTONE AND SON RECREATE ICONIC PAUL AND LINDA MCCARTNEY VEG CAMPAIGN

Bear and His Famous Mum Pay Tribute to Other Famous Duo’s Message, Saying, ‘Now’s the Time!’

London – As much of the world focuses on their health during the coronavirus pandemic, Alicia Silverstone and her son, Bear, have used their at-home time to recreate the iconic PETA US photo of Paul and Linda McCartney for a new ad that declares, “GO Vegan. STOP Eating Animals.” The campaign urges everyone to boost their immune system and help prevent the spread of deadly animal-borne diseases that originate in meat markets by cutting meat, eggs, fish, and dairy from their diets.

Paul McCartney agrees that there’s never been a better time to make the switch. He says, “The meat trade’s threat to our health can be halted, and there are hopeful signs that people are starting to realise that this must be done to secure a brighter future for our children and theirs.”

Sitting down with her 8-year-old son to discuss what it means to pay tribute to the Beatles icon and his late wife – who posed in the “Stop” and “Go” shirts together nearly three decades ago – Silverstone says, in an exclusive video interview with PETA US, “I’ve been lucky to be an activist alongside [Paul] for the last 25 years, and he’s just an incredible man and an incredible heart. I’m so sad I didn’t get to meet his beautiful wife, Linda. But doing anything in his honor is extraordinary.”

PETA notes that COVID-19 originated in a Chinese “wet market” where live and dead animals were sold for human consumption. Filthy meat markets, factory farms, and abattoirs crammed full of sick and stressed animals are recognised by virologists to be breeding grounds for zoonotic diseases. Each person who goes vegan also spares the lives of nearly 200 animals every year and is far less prone to suffering from heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and cancer than meat-eaters are, according to the US Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Silverstone and her son join a long list of celebrities – including Natalie Portman, Thandie Newton, Joaquin Phoenix, Pamela Anderson, Maggie Q, Woody Harrelson, RZA, Peter Dinklage, and Evanna Lynch – who’ve teamed up with PETA or its affiliates to encourage people to stop eating animals.

PETA – whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat” and which opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview – offers a free vegan starter kit (available here) full of recipes, tips, and more. For more information, please visit PETA.org.uk.
