PETA Slams Gucci’s Exotic Skins Accessories in ‘Bloody’ Protest
Italian TV star, singer, and longtime vegan Daniela Martani held a “bloody”, cut-open “snake” outside Gucci’s flagship store in Milan as she led PETA supporters in urging the brand to ban exotic skins.
The action follows a PETA Asia exposé revealing that the cost of Gucci accessories is much higher than what’s stated on the price tag. Suppliers were seen bashing lizards in the head with machetes and hacking at their necks in botched decapitation attempts.
Gucci Accessories Cost Lives
Today’s compassionate consumers would be horrified to know that every lizard-skin shoe or snakeskin purse on Gucci’s shelves represents a sensitive animal who was beaten, cut open, and hacked apart.
How Your Exotic Skins Purses Are Really Made
At the slaughterhouse, workers tie lizards’ legs together and behead them without stunning – even though lizards’ brains remain conscious, meaning that they can feel pain for over 30 minutes after decapitation.
PETA Asia has also documented that in the exotic-skins industry, crocodiles’ necks are hacked open and metal rods are shoved into their heads in an attempt to scramble their brains. Snakes are pumped full of water to loosen their skin, which is peeled off. Often, the animals are still conscious during these horrific acts.
False ‘Animal Welfare’ Claims Sold by the Brand
The investigation footage directly contradicts claims by Gucci’s parent company, Kering, that it is committed to “implementing and verifying the highest standards of animal welfare across [its] supply chains”, as well as its animal welfare guidelines, which call for “humane handling at end of life”.
Chopping the heads off conscious lizards is not humane.
Gucci Must Stop Stealing Skins
We are urging Gucci to embrace animal-free fashion and stop selling exotic skins, just as it did with fur. Please join us and take action for all the lizards who are abused, decapitated, and skinned for Gucci accessories:
