Fireworks Season Has Arrived – Here’s How to Keep Cats, Dogs and Other Animals Safe

Every year, countless animal companions disappear after fireworks displays on occasions like New Year’s Eve, Guy Fawkes Night and Diwali. Here’s how to keep them safe.

Terrified animals who attempt to flee the traumatising barrage of explosions often become disorientated and can’t find their way back home. To make matters worse, some cruel people actually clip bangers to animals’ bodies, causing them serious injury or even death.

During fireworks season, we can help make the festivities enjoyable and safe for all living beings by taking the following steps:

Keep cats and dogs indoors when fireworks are going off, and if possible, stay with them.
Close your windows and curtains and turn on a radio or TV to help drown out the noise.

Make sure that your animal companion is microchipped and wearing a collar with an up-to-date identification tag.
Be on the lookout for people who tie firecrackers to the tails of dogs and other animals, and report any incidents to the police.
Whenever possible, discourage people from setting off very loud bangers – animals have far more sensitive hearing than humans do.
Keep an eye out for lost animal companions, and look after them until their guardians can be found.
Instead of setting off dangerous, ear-splitting fireworks, light up your house with lamps and other decorative ornaments that’ll preserve everyone’s hearing.
