The meat industry is by far the biggest killer of animals around the world. It’s responsible for relentless, routine cruelty to pigs, sheep, cows, chickens, ducks, geese, and other animals who suffer every minute of their short lives. Most animals killed for their flesh will endure confinement and intense crowding in industrial sheds before being sent to the abattoir when they’ve lived just a fraction of their natural life expectancy.
Farming animals for meat also has a hugely detrimental effect on the environment. It’s estimated to be one of the largest sources of carbon-dioxide emissions and the single largest source of both nitrous-oxide and methane emissions, all of which are major contributors to climate change.
Eating meat doesn’t just harm animals – it can also harm humans. Consuming flesh takes a terrible toll on human health, taxing the digestive system and increasing the risk of life-threatening diseases. Authorities such as the British Medical Association confirm that vegetarians have lower rates of obesity, coronary heart disease, and high blood pressure.

Ditching meat is the obvious choice for those who are worried about cruelty to animals, climate change, or their health. More and more people are doing so every day, and as a result, meat-free options abound in restaurants, in supermarkets, and on the high street.
