Canterbury, Kent – Today, holiday shoppers at Canterbury’s iconic Christmas market were met with a surprising sight, as a flock of PETA supporters dressed as bruised and bloodied sheep appeared inside a giant, festive “snow globe”. Bearing signs that read, “Help Me!” and “Wear Vegan!”, the harried herd plead with passersby to leave wool out of their wardrobes.

Images and video footage are available here and here.

“Playful, curious sheep don’t want to be pinned down and sliced up any more than a human would, but that’s exactly what happens in shearing sheds,” says PETA Senior Campaigns Manager Kate Werner. “PETA encourages everyone to opt for warm and cosy vegan fabrics and leave wool out of their winter wonderlands.”

Sheep grow depressed if isolated from their flock and can even detect anxiety in another sheep simply by observing their face. PETA exposés of wool operations in England and Scotland found routine cruelty to sheep, who were beaten, punched, and kicked by workers. A PETA Asia investigation resulted in the first conviction of a sheep shearer in Scotland for cruelty to animals.

PETA – whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to wear” – opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETA.org.uk or follow PETA UK on FacebookX, TikTok, or Instagram.
