Plymouth Actor Stars in PETA Christmas Ad That Will Have Viewers Reaching for Nut Roast, Not Roast Beef
The Spot is Now Showing in Plymouth Cinemas Throughout the Festive Season
Plymouth – PETA’s newest Christmas advert, which stars 12-year-old actor Alice Downs from Plymouth, urges people to see the individual behind every beef Wellington centrepiece. Created in collaboration with creative agency Atomic London and filmed at Hillside Animal Sanctuary, the spot begins with a young schoolgirl (Downs) stopping to practise the familiar tune on her trumpet near a farm she passes on her walk home, where she bonds with a curious cow who always comes to the fence to listen. But when the girl brings her mother to meet her new friend, who is nowhere to be found, the joy fades – because, at that very moment, her friend is being loaded onto a lorry bound for the abattoir. The advert ends with a simple plea: “Everyone deserves a merry Christmas. Please leave animals off your plate.”

“Children have a natural empathy for animals, but many young people – and adults, too – may not think about the fact that their holiday roast came from playful, loving cows, who are easily befriended,” says PETA Vice President of Programmes Elisa Allen. “PETA encourages Plymouth locals to show goodwill to all by choosing a delicious vegan feast this Christmas and beyond.”
As viral videos show, cows enjoy music and will often stop whatever they’re doing to take in the soothing sounds of instruments. Beat-loving bovines are also highly social individuals who develop strong friendships over time – yet every year, millions of cows are sent on a frightening journey to a slaughterhouse, where workers shoot them in the head with a captive-bolt gun, hang them up by one leg, and cut their throat, often while they’re still conscious. It doesn’t have to be this way.
