Maison Margiela Goes Angora-Free Following Appeal From PETA
London – Following a request from PETA, French luxury label Maison Margiela has confirmed it “will no longer source angora rabbit fur for future collections”. The brand banned fur in 2018, with Creative Director John Galliano proclaiming, “You can be outrageous and fun without fur!”
“PETA celebrates Maison Margiela’s commitment to expanding its fur-free policy to include angora, which is the fur of terrified, suffering rabbits,” says PETA Vice President of Corporate Projects Yvonne Taylor. “This cruelly produced yarn has all but disappeared from fashion, and we are urging any designer still using it to follow in Maison Margiela’s footsteps.”
Investigations in Asia and Europe have revealed that most rabbits used for angora are stretched across boards and their fur is violently torn out by the fistful every three months. Others are tied up before their fur is cut or sheared, and their delicate skin is cut open by the sharp tools as they struggle to escape.
Maison Margiela joins hundreds of other major brands – including Armani, Valentino, Gucci, Saint Laurent, Calvin Klein, Burberry, Tommy Hilfiger, and Isabel Marant – that have pledged not to sell fur or angora after being contacted by PETA entities.
PETA – whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to wear” – opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETA.org.uk or follow the group on Facebook, X, TikTok, or Instagram.
