In July 2024, the Labour Party won the general election, and it’s crucial that we urge the new ministers to prioritise protecting animals.

Ministers, including the prime minister, the secretary of state for defence, and the secretary of state for environment, food, and rural affairs, are the targets of several PETA campaigns. These leaders must prioritise critical animal rights issues, such as replacing the bear fur used for the King’s Guard’s caps with a cruelty-free upgrade, ending experiments on animals, and banning foie gras imports.

As these ministers settle into their roles, please urge them to take immediate steps to help animals.

I am completely opposed to the UK Ministry of Defence’s (MoD) use of bear fur to make ornamental headpieces for the five regiments of foot guards.

A PETA exposé shows hunters baiting bears with buckets of sticky, greasy food before shooting the unsuspecting animals with crossbows. Once hunters have slaughtered the bears, their body parts are then often kept as trophies and their fur is auctioned off to buyers. The MoD capmakers buy the fur from these auctions and use them to make the headgear worn by the King’s Guard.

Instead of financially supporting the shameful slaughter of black bears in Canada for these ceremonial caps, the UK should be setting a compassionate example by switching to high-tech, luxurious faux fur.

A faux-fur alternative that meets the MoD’s requirements has been created by PETA UK and faux furrier ECOPEL. It matches the unique 9.5-centimetre length of the fur currently used for the caps and is 100% waterproof. There is no reason why the cruelly obtained bearskin cannot be replaced with this viable option.

Over 100,000 UK residents have signed a government petition calling for the faux fur to be quick-marched into service.
