Will Fisherman’s Friend Embrace Fish-Friendly Name Change?
Blackpool – As Fisherman’s Friend prepares to develop a new factory in its town of origin, PETA sent a letter to managing director Duncan Lofthouse encouraging him to capitalise on the opportunity by rebranding – changing the company’s name and logo from one promoting the cruel and environmentally disastrous fishing industry to one that supports the protection of the world’s oceans and their inhabitants. PETA’s suggestion for the new name? “Fishes Are Friends.”
“In place of a product intended to soothe the craggy throats aboard trawlers that suck the oceans clean of life, we propose renaming the lozenge to Fishes Are Friends – the perfect solution for succouring the throats and hearts of those who love the oceans and everyone in them, from conservationists braving squalls to clean up discarded fishing gear to compassionate consumers protecting gentle fish by not eating them,” writes PETA Vice President of Vegan Projects Dawn Carr.
More fish are killed for their flesh each year than all other animals combined. Fish are now known to feel pain as acutely as mammals do, and they have long-term memories and like to sing underwater, but in the fishing industry, they’re impaled, crushed, suffocated, or cut open and gutted – all while conscious. In addition, 38 million tonnes of other aquatic animals are unintentionally caught annually as the fishing industry aims to increase profits. The Netflix documentary Seaspiracy outlines a game plan for saving the imperilled oceans, which includes a shift to vegan eating and ending fishing subsidies. Every person who goes vegan saves the lives of nearly 200 animals (including aquatic ones) each year.
PETA – whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”– opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. The group offers a free vegan starter kit. For more information, please visit PETA.org.uk or follow the group on X, Facebook, TikTok, or Instagram.
