Newcastle – If you wouldn’t eat a kitten, why eat a fish? That’s the food for thought PETA supporters served up today, on National Fish and Chip Day (June 6) as they set up shop outside Grey’s Monument in Newcastle, displaying mock kittens wrapped in newspaper surrounded by cones of chips, saltshakers, and condiments. The action is part of PETA’s efforts to challenge speciesism – the belief that the differences between humans and other animals warrant torturing, killing, and eating those of other species.

“When it comes to being playful, inquisitive, and sensitive to pain, fish are no different from the cats who share our homes,” says PETA Senior Campaigns Manager Kate Werner. “PETA urges anyone disturbed by the idea of cooking a kitten to extend that compassion to all animals and to, please, go vegan.”

PETA – whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat” – opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information please visit PETA.org.uk or follow the group on Facebook, X, TikTok, or Instagram.
