PETA Urges Royal Bath & West Show to Go Vegan
Bath, Somerset – Ahead of the Royal Bath & West Show, starting on 30 May, PETA sent a letter to Royal Bath & West Society CEO Carol Paris encouraging her to transition the event to a kinder and more sustainable vegan showcase of the region’s hard-working plant farmers.
Currently, the show subjects hundreds of non-consenting animals to stressful journeys and confinement and parades them about for entertainment. Past events have indoctrinated children, encouraging them to exploit animals by stealing cows’ milk. A vegan event, by contrast, could feature fun, family-friendly activities such as a pumpkin parade or other activities that involve only willing participants.
“By ditching the animal exhibits and parades as well as the sale of animal-derived foods, the Royal Bath & West Show could deliver a ‘grand celebration of rural life’ that doesn’t cost anyone theirs,” writes PETA Vice President of Vegan Corporate Projects Dawn Carr. “We hope you’ll agree that modernising the show by making it vegan and free of animal exhibits would be a great way to offer a fun family day out to support local, ethical, and sustainable plant-based agriculture.”
Millions of pigs, chickens, and cows – intelligent, sensitive individuals who experience pain and fear – endure short, miserable lives in the meat, egg, and dairy industries. They’re subjected to extreme crowding, routine mutilations without pain relief, a terrifying trip to an abattoir, and a violent, painful death. Many are ineffectively stunned and killed while still conscious.
Animal agriculture is a leading cause of environmental destruction, as it requires massive amounts of land, food, energy, and water while emitting huge quantities of greenhouse gases. Researchers at the University of Oxford determined that current agricultural systems make it impossible to meet climate commitments, even if all other sources of greenhouse gas emissions were to be eliminated. PETA recently launched a new campaign calling on government officials to stop subsidising these environmentally disastrous industries to the tune of billions of pounds each year and redirect those crucial funds towards farmers who are cultivating nourishing fruits and vegetables.
PETA – whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat” – opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview, and offers a free vegan starter kit for those ready to make the switch to vegan eating.
