Carrefour Commits to No Longer Selling Frog Legs From Indonesia After Chilling PETA Asia Investigation
London – Global supermarket giant Carrefour committed to cutting ties with its supplier in Indonesia and ending its sale of frog legs from the country following PETA’s shocking video exposé revealing that frogs are butchered alive there so that their legs can be sold in French supermarkets, including Carrefour. This decision comes after more than 90,000 people took action for frogs by joining PETA entities around the world in writing to Carrefour Group.
“We celebrate that Carrefour has taken action for frogs who are captured in the wild, confined to severely crowded bags, and slaughtered – some while fully conscious,” says PETA Vice President for Europe Mimi Bekhechi. “PETA calls on caring consumers to pledge never to buy or consume frog legs and contact any restaurants they come across serving them, anywhere in the world, asking them to remove them from their menu.”
A PETA Asia investigation showed workers capturing frogs in their natural habitat and stuffing them into sealed bags, where they slowly suffocated as they tried to escape. Workers then cut off frogs’ heads and legs – directly on the ground or on chopping boards stained with blood – and skinned them, sometimes while they were still alive and conscious.
PETA – whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way” and which opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview, calls on the public to pledge never to buy or consume frogs’ legs and to write to restaurants that include them on their menu.
