Will Broxbourne Lane Cut the ‘Cheese’ and Promote Houmous Instead?

Will Broxbourne Lane Cut the ‘Cheese’ and Promote Houmous Instead?

Broxbourne – Ahead of World Vegan Day (1 November), PETA sent a letter to Mayor of Broxbourne Paul Seeby with an unusual request: will the council rename Bread and Cheese Lane to “Bread and Houmous Lane”?

In the letter (available here), PETA – whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat or abuse in any other way” – points out that the change from a name that “celebrates a pus-laden coagulation” to one that promotes “everyone’s favourite chickpea dip” would inspire the public to make healthier food choices, help protect the environment, and prevent animal suffering. The group also offered to provide residents with a selection of delicious bread and houmous samples if the change is implemented.

“Cows are gentle, intelligent individuals who, when given the opportunity, nurture their young and enjoy lifelong friendships with other cows. But those confined to dairy farms endure short and miserable lives,” writes PETA Vice President of Vegan Corporate Projects Dawn Carr. “We hope you can see how a simple name change could help save humans, the planet, and the other animals we share it with.”

Cows exploited for dairy are artificially inseminated (i.e. raped) – workers insert an arm into the cow’s rectum and a metal rod into her vagina to deliver semen. After giving birth, the mother’s beloved calf is taken away so that the milk meant to nourish them can be used for cheese and other dairy products. She will be sent to slaughter once her body is worn out by repeated pregnancies.

In addition to sparing nearly 200 animals every year, each person who goes vegan helps fight the climate catastrophe. Researchers at the University of Oxford found that each person who goes vegan lowers their food-related carbon footprint by up to 73%, making it the single biggest way to reduce one’s negative impact on the planet.
