Xmas Feast: Vegans Serve Up Roast ‘Baby’ in Manchester

Manchester – Today, two PETA merrymakers served a life-like roasted doll on a festively decorated table in Manchester’s Market Street to push shoppers to think twice about who they’re chowing down on. Armed with signs declaring, “Leave Babies off the Christmas Table: Go Vegan!” and “Turkeys Are Killed by the Age of 6 Months,” PETA supporters encouraged everyone to eat vegan over the Christmas period and beyond.

“From vegan turkey crowns to nut roasts, there are plenty of traditional Christmas offerings that are as kind to animals as they are delicious,” says PETA Senior Campaigns Manager Kate Werner. “PETA is calling on anyone repulsed by the prospect of roasting a newborn to leave baby animals in peace and off their plates.”

All animals are someone’s baby, regardless of species. And each year, millions of turkeys suffer and die for the UK’s Christmas dinners. In nature, turkeys are protective parents and spirited explorers who can live for up to 10 years, but those killed for food are normally slaughtered between 12 and 26 weeks of age. The young birds are often hung from metal shackles by their feet and dragged through an electrified bath that can cause full-body tremors. Some are still conscious when their throats are slit and as they’re placed into scalding-hot water to remove their feathers.
