Here’s the Rest of Your Down Jacket: PETA Supporters Surprised Shoppers Outside Marks & Spencer
PETA supporters surprised shoppers outside Marks & Spencer’s flagship store on Oxford Street in London in a demonstration pushing for retailers and consumers to reject down.
Suffering Is the Standard
No matter what the label or certification scheme claims, the production of any kind of down garment causes harm to gentle birds. Ducks and geese are kept in filthy, crowded sheds with wire flooring and denied the opportunity to engage in natural behaviour such as bathing, swimming, flying, and foraging.
A new PETA Asia investigation revealed workers on farms and in abattoirs in Vietnam stabbing conscious ducks in the neck and cutting off the legs of live birds, who continued to shriek and struggle after being dismembered.
Their feathers were later sold to companies, including Marks & Spencer, H&M, and GAP, as “responsibly sourced”.
Never, Ever Buy Down
You have the power to allow gentle birds to keep their feathers. Simply leave down pillows and jackets off your shopping list and tell your friends and family to do so, too.
Opt for modern, high-tech fabrics that are widely available and are warmer, lighter, and, of course, ethical.
Ducks and Geese Need Your Help
We are calling on Marks & Spencer and all other companies that still peddle feathers to ban the sale of all down, regardless of which deceptive assurance scheme it’s labelled with. Please help us put pressure on these companies – send them a message now:
