London – Today, Love Island star Faye Winter made a bold splash for marine animals as she appeared body-painted as an orca and confined to a cramped bathtub in Piccadilly Circus to urge the many Brits reportedly planning their warm-weather getaways to skip marine parks that hold orcas and other dolphins in tanks that, to them, are the size of a bathtub.

As part of the campaign, Winter also sent a letter (available here) to Jet2holidays – an official partner of Love Island – calling on the company to “do the right thing” and stop promoting and selling tickets to marine parks like Tenerife’s Loro Parque. In the letter, she calls on the travel provider to join Expedia, Tripadvisor, Virgin Atlantic Holidays, British Airways Holidays, Club Med, and others, that have stopped promoting and selling tickets to facilities that keep whales and dolphins captive for entertainment.

“Knowing that the animals trapped in tanks at marine parks are given no opportunity to make a single independent choice is heartbreaking,” says Winter. “It’s wrong on every level.”

“PETA is urging Jet2holidays to stop selling tickets to these watery prisons,” says PETA Director Elisa Allen. “Tourists can vote with their wallets by never visiting parks that hold whales, dolphins, or other marine mammals captive.”

Free-roaming orcas form complex relationships, work cooperatively to find food, and traverse up to 150 miles of ocean every day. Those held captive at marine parks are separated from their families and kept in cramped tanks in incompatible social groups. The majority spend decades confined to a prison around 10,000 times smaller than their natural home range filled with chemically treated water. They’re forced to perform uncomfortable, confusing tricks for tourists, and the majority die far short of their natural life expectancy.

PETA – whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to use for entertainment” – opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETA’s website or follow the group on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram.
