Can’t-Miss PETA Banner Crashes Windsor’s Changing of the Guard Over Bearskin Caps
Windsor – Today, PETA supporters descended on the Changing of the Guard ceremony, presenting a banner emblazoned with the message, “Bearskin Caps? That’s Old Hat!” As the guards marched up the high street and into Windsor Castle, animal rights defenders urged the Ministry of Defence (MoD) to replace the bearskins used to make the King’s Guard’s caps with the world’s first faux bear fur, created by PETA and luxury faux furrier ECOPEL.

The action comes after the group initiated legal proceedings against the MoD on the grounds of unlawful conduct following the ministry’s refusal even to read a laboratory test report about the faux bear fur, which meets the MoD’s five criteria a faux bear fur must fulfil and in some areas outperforms bear fur. ECOPEL has even offered an unlimited amount of the faux fur free of charge until 2030, which would save taxpayer money and many bears’ lives.
“The MoD has no excuse for failing to march high-tech, luxurious faux bear fur into service,” says PETA Senior Campaigns Manager Kate Werner. “It’s high time there was a changing of the King’s Guard’s caps, and PETA is calling on the MoD to honour its word and embrace a kinder future.”
PETA notes that it takes the skin of at least one bear to make a single cap. Some bears are shot several times before they die, and some escape only to bleed to death. When mother bears are killed, their cubs are left to starve.
In July, a government e-petition in support of PETA’s campaign amassed more than 100,000 signatures from the public, triggering a parliamentary debate.
PETA – whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to wear” – opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETA.org.uk or follow the group on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram.
