‘Meat Is Killing the Planet – Do Something!’ PETA Urges C40

London – Today, ahead of the C40 World Mayors Summit, PETA entities sent letters to Mayor Horacio Rodríguez Larreta of Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Mayor Sadiq Khan of London lauding their commitment to “radical climate action” but pointing out one glaring omission in the summit’s proposed agenda: animal agriculture’s role in the climate catastrophe. As the letters note, the mayors are aware that raising animals for food is a leading cause of environmental destruction, as it requires massive amounts of land, food, energy, and water while emitting huge quantities of greenhouse gases – so why are they skirting the issue?

“There’s a big, hamburger-shaped hole in the mayors’ climate agenda,” says PETA UK Senior Campaigns Manager Kate Werner. “If city leaders are really serious about combatting the climate catastrophe, they should start by promoting the consumption of vegan food and implementing a plan to end animal farming, as PETA has been urging for years.”

Researchers at the   recently determined that current agricultural systems make it impossible to meet climate commitments even if all other sources of fossil fuel emissions were eliminated. In addition to imperilling the planet, the meat, egg, and dairy industries are abysmally cruel to animals, who spend their lives confined to filthy sheds before being transported in all weather conditions to slaughterhouses, where their throats are slit

PETA – whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat” – opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. The letters are available upon request. For more information, please visit PETA.org.uk or follow the group on FacebookTwitter, or Instagram.
