London – “Flesh is flesh. We are all animals – go vegan.” That’s the message – so obvious yet so often ignored – PETA displayed today in honor of World Day for the End of Speciesism (27 August) when a trio of protesters dressed as animals “dined on” a “blood-smeared” human in London’s Leicester Square. The “lunch-in” is part of PETA’s efforts to challenge speciesism – the belief that the differences between humans and other animals are enough to warrant torturing, killing, and eating those of a different species to us.

“Whether it’s a human, pig, cow, or chicken, no one wants to suffer and die to end up on a plate,” says PETA Senior Campaigns Manager Kate Werner. “If you wouldn’t want to be caged, killed, and chopped up for a fleeting moment of taste, spare a thought for the individuals who are subjected to this fate and go vegan today.”

Speciesism is used to justify the exploitation of animals – including killing billions of cows, chickens, pigs, and others for food every year. PETA – whose motto reads, “Animals are not ours to experiment on, eat, wear, use for entertainment, or abuse in any other way” – encourages everyone to combat this systematic oppression by not only choosing vegan food but also buying vegan fashion, choosing cosmetics that weren’t tested on animals, staying away from animal entertainment, and otherwise rejecting the exploitation of animals.
