London – PETA supporters, alongside a lifelike mutilated “monkey”, descended on the EGYPTAIR terminal at Heathrow Airport today with an important message: “Cruelty Doesn’t Fly: EGYPTAIR, Ban Monkey Shipments!” The action follows the launch of a campaign by international PETA entities calling on EYPTAIR to follow the example of other airlines and stop transporting monkeys to laboratories.

“The monkeys who survive the gruelling, days-long journeys in cargo holds and lorries end up being mutilated and killed in US laboratories,” says PETA Science Policy Manager Dr Julia Baines. “PETA is calling on EGYPTAIR to join other leading airlines in banning the shipment of suffering, laboratory-bound primates.”

The group notes that shipping primates for experimentation poses a grave, potentially fatal public health risk and causes the animals immense suffering. These highly social and sensitive individuals are either captured in nature or bred in captivity on squalid factory farms, where many die from injury and disease even before they’re crammed into small wooden crates and confined to the dark, terrifying cargo holds of planes for more than 30 hours.

In laboratories, primates may be mutilated, poisoned, deprived of food and water, forcibly immobilised in restraint devices, infected with painful and deadly diseases, psychologically tormented, and killed.

PETA notes that nearly every major airline in the world has stopped transporting monkeys to laboratories,PETA – whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to experiment on” – opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview.
