PETA and VFC Give Away Vegan Chicken to Flocks of University of Bristol Students
Why did PETA and VFC cross the road? To give away free vegan chicken and vegan starter kits to students at the University of Bristol!
Today’s collaboration taught students that you can have drool-worthy food and take a stand against the exploitation and slaughter of millions of chickens.
Chickens: The Most Exploited Animals on the Planet
Chickens raised for meat are one of the most abused animals on the planet. Each individual will spend their entire life crammed into a filthy, windowless shed with up to 50,000 other birds. They may never get to see daylight or breathe fresh air.
Many live amid their own waste and the rotting corpses of birds who have died from the horrific conditions.
Bred to grow unnaturally fast, these unhappy birds develop such a large upper body that they can barely support their own weight. Many become immobile after a couple of weeks and die of starvation or heart failure. They reach “slaughter weight” at only 42 days old.
To prevent the birds from pecking each other out of frustration caused by the stress of confinement, farmers may cut off parts of their beaks with an infra-red laser – an agonising procedure done with no painkillers that can make eating painful or impossible.
At the end of their miserable lives, the birds are gassed or shackled by the legs and hung upside down on a production line so that their heads can be plunged into an electrified water bath.
Our Appetite for Animal Flesh Is Going to Be the Death of Us
Filthy factory farms are a breeding ground for disease. Over the last two decades, bird flu has killed hundreds of humans around the globe.
Experts believe that it’s only a matter of time before a strain of bird flu causes a widespread human outbreak.
People who bring chicken flesh and eggs into their homes may be putting themselves and their families at risk. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization, the virus can be caught simply by eating undercooked meat or eggs, by eating food prepared on the same cutting board as infected meat or eggs, or even by touching eggshells contaminated with the disease.
Choosing VFC Saves Lives
Every time we sit down to eat, we have a choice. We can choose to eat with compassion or we can support an industry that crams millions of birds into sheds and condemns them to a life of misery. To date, over 100,000 chickens have been spared because kind-hearted people chose VFC’s Vegan Fried Chick*n over animal flesh.
… And the Planet
In an independent audit conducted by Mondra, VFC’s Vegan Fried Chick*n was compared gram for gram to chicken flesh.
The comparison found that 100 g of VFC’s Vegan Fried Chick*n Fillets used 24 times less water to produce than 100 g of southern-fried chicken fillets (otherwise known as dead birds). VFC’s Vegan Fried Chick*n came out on top in all other areas, too, showing that it’s the most environmentally friendly option.
Winner winner, vegan chicken dinner.
