Earth Day Message From PETA – Go Vegan to Take the Earth off the Grill
“Would you like some environmental destruction with that?” Well, if you eat animals, you are effectively cooking the Earth on the barbecue, too.
Today, to mark Earth Day, our “chef” served up a grilled “Earth” in an eye-opening display in South Bank, London, cooking “meat continents” to show how the consumption of animal flesh is destroying the planet. The demo aimed to rally everyone to go vegan – for Earth Day and beyond.
When going vegan can reduce your food-related carbon footprint by up to 73% , it’s a no-brainer to ditch beef for beans to save the planet and animals’ lives.
It’s Really Getting Hot in Here
As the UK is experiencing an “undeniable warming trend” and extreme weather events are becoming increasingly common, it’s never been more important to go vegan.
The International Panel on Climate Change has found that agriculture, forestry, and the accompanying changes in land use account for as much as 25% of human-induced greenhouse gas emissions. Most scientists agree that vegan foods have a smaller carbon footprint than meat, eggs, and dairy and that going vegan is the single biggest way for any individual to reduce their environmental impact on the planet.
Farmed sheep and cows release huge volumes of methane – a greenhouse gas 30 times more potent than carbon dioxide at trapping heat in the atmosphere – which contributes to the climate catastrophe.
Producing fertiliser for crops to feed animals, petrol to run the lorries that take them to slaughter, and electricity to freeze their carcasses also requires massive amounts of fossil fuels, which results in the release of huge amounts of carbon dioxide into our atmosphere.
