‘Eating Animals Got Us Into This Mess!’ PETA Targets COP26 With Bridge Banner Drop
Glasgow – With the United Nations’ climate change conference (COP26) underway, PETA an enormous banner over the M8 motorway near the city centre railing against humans’ consumption of meat, eggs, and dairy, a major cause of the climate catastrophe.
The banner drop took place on the footbridge over the M8 adjacent to 57 Durham St.
The banner urged passers-by to go vegan now, as the UN has stated that animal agriculture is responsible for nearly a fifth of human-induced greenhouse-gas emissions and that raising animals for food is “one of the top two or three most significant contributors to the most serious environmental problems, at every scale from local to global”.
“The UN itself acknowledges that a worldwide shift to vegan eating would mitigate the worst effects of climate change,” says PETA Senior Campaigns Manager Kate Werner. “PETA’s big banner is sending a message that the easiest, most effective thing we can all do for the planet is dump meat, eggs, and dairy.”
Researchers at the University of Oxford found that cutting meat and dairy from your diet could reduce an individual’s carbon footprint from food by up to 73% . Doing so would also prevent animals from suffering on filthy farms and dying in slaughterhouses after their throats are slit.
PETA has also plastered ads on the sides of local buses that pass the conference and travel into the city centre, urging people to “take personal responsibility” and go vegan for the planet.
PETA – whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat” and which opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview – offers a free vegan starter kit on its website. For more information, please visit PETA.org.uk or follow the group on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram.
