PETA and Over 10,000 Supporters Push Parkrun to Run From ‘Happy’ Egg Sponsorship

London – After a PETA exposé revealed that suppliers to one of the UK’s top “free-range” farms, Happy Egg Co, subjected hens to painful mutilations and severe crowding, the group is urging Parkrun to sever ties with the controversial brand. Within the first week of launching the campaign, over 10,000 concerned supporters have joined the call to action.

The investigation found hens crammed tightly inside dark sheds. Many could not engage in natural behaviour, such as stretching their necks for foraging and properly roosting and resting, and some had open wounds. The group also documented that the corpses of dead birds were left to rot among the living – a far cry from the idyllic images used in the Happy Egg Co’s marketing.

“Parkrun is tainting its wholesome reputation by accepting sponsorship from a company whose suppliers have been repeatedly exposed for keeping hens packed in filthy sheds and subjecting them to painful mutilations,” says PETA Director Elisa Allen. “Hens suffer on egg farms, which is why so many people are turning to truly happy vegan eggs, which are cholesterol-free, nutritious, and perfect for any athlete.”

PETA notes that vegans are less likely to suffer from heart disease, strokes, diabetes, cancer, and obesity. And because farms – including those labelled “free-range” – confine animals to crowded, dirty sheds, egg production poses a pandemic risk. SARS, swine flu, bird flu, and COVID-19 all stemmed from confining and killing animals for food.

PETA – whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat” – opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information on PETA’s investigative newsgathering and reporting, please visit PETA.org.uk or follow the group on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram.
