PETA’s Wedding Gift to Boris and Carrie Is … a Goose!
In honour of prime minister Boris Johnson and Carrie Symonds’ surprise wedding, PETA has arranged a unique present for the happy couple: a rescued goose named Barrie (a mix of the names Boris and Carrie).
The gorgeous goose was destined for slaughter but will instead live out his days in peace, in the company of other geese and ducks, at Hillside Animal Sanctuary in Norwich!
Why a Goose for Boris’ Big Day?
Geese are loyal birds who are fiercely protective of their partners and offspring. So it seems fitting that the prime minister and Ms Symonds’ joyous occasion would coincide with the joy that Barrie the goose is experiencing thanks to his newfound freedom.
We hope the gift will inspire Britons to spare other geese by refusing to eat their flesh and by joining the campaign to ban foie gras – a pâté made from the diseased liver of force-fed geese and ducks – in the UK.
What’s Wrong With Foie Gras?
As documented by PETA, to make foie gras, metal pipes are shoved down geese’s throats and huge amounts of grain and fat are pumped into their stomachs several times a day.
The birds’ livers become diseased as they swell to up to 10 times their normal size, and the pipes often puncture the birds’ throats – frequently causing them to bleed to death.
The process is illegal in the UK, yet foie gras is still allowed to be imported, sold, and served here.
Support a Ban on Foie Gras in the UK
To date, more than 33,000 PETA supporters have joined the call to ban this “torture in a tin”.
Boris Johnson’s government has acknowledged how cruel its production is, and in its 2021 Action Plan for Animal Welfare committed to “building a clear evidence base to inform decisions on banning the import or sale of foie gras”.
