Ferret-Fetching Lifeboat Crew Wins Hero to Animals Award!

The Northumberland town of Newbiggin-by-the-Sea witnessed a daring rescue recently, when a lifeboat crew sprang to the assistance of two stranded ferrets, Tootsie and Lucky.

The furry pair were huddled in the crevice of a rock off Cambois Bay, just minutes away from drowning or being swept away by the rising tide, when a life-saving volunteer arrived in the nick of time and lifted them to safety – much to the relief of the animals’ distressed guardians. As the town’s lifeboat operations manager pointed out, this is “probably the first ferret rescue in lifeboat history” – so to acknowledge the compassion and courage of the crew, we’ve given them a Hero to Animals Award!

Stories of people who go out of their way to help others are always inspiring, and they prove that we can all make a difference to animals’ lives in our own way. You can be a hero to animals, too, by adopting a cat from an animal shelter, helping wildlife in your garden and/or vowing that no animal will ever die for your dinner by going vegan.
