Dairy Industry Cruelty Prompts Full-Page Ad Seeking Whistle-Blowers

New PETA Ad in the Daily Post Asks Insiders to Report Sick, Injured, Abused, Neglected, and Dying Cows on UK Farms

North Wales – In response to the fact that consumers are increasingly ditching dairy and opting for dairy-free milk because of concerns about animal welfare, the climate, and their own health, PETA has placed a full-page ad in today’s edition of the Daily Post to help lift the lid on cruelty in the industry. The advert asks whistle-blowers to come forward with reports of cruelty to cows on UK dairy farms by submitting evidence to [email protected].

After British Dairying rejected the ad – for not being “relevant” for its readership – PETA turned to regional publications to place the advert. Following its placement in the Daily Post, the group is also looking to place it in newspapers in other areas where dairy farming is prevalent, such as Shropshire and Yorkshire.

“If you’ve seen cows struggling to stand up, crying out after being separated from their calves, or mired in their own waste, PETA wants to hear from you,” says PETA Senior Campaigns Manager Kate Werner. “Routine abuse and neglect is taking place out of view of the public on dairy farms across the UK, and exposing this cruelty is the first step to stopping it.”

Cows used for dairy are artificially inseminated, and their calves are taken from them shortly after birth so that their milk can be sold and consumed by humans instead. Male calves, who are considered a by-product by the dairy industry, may be shot in the head soon after birth or sentenced to a short, miserable life before being killed and carved up as veal. Most female calves are destined for the same fate as their mothers: used as milk machines until their bodies give out and they’re slaughtered for cheap meat. Dairy-free milks are better for animals and contain none of the artery-clogging animal fat and cholesterol of cows’ milk.
