Giant PETA ‘Leek’ Proclaims, ‘Leeks, Not Leaks. Try Vegan!’

Dublin – Today, after controversy over possible government leaks made headlines this week, PETA supporter Siobhan Buckley dressed as a giant leek stalked the streets of Dublin, carrying a sign reading, “Leeks, Not Leaks. Try Vegan.”

The action is part of the group’s effort to encourage people to eat vegetables, fruits, grains, pulses, nuts, and other vegan foods instead of animals.

“Many people feel that there’s little we have control over these days – but one thing we can control is how our lifestyle affects the world around us,” says PETA Director Elisa Allen. “PETA’s giant ‘leek’ is a fun way to remind people to eat their veggies and go vegan – for the sake of their health, the planet, and animals.”

Each person who goes vegan spares the lives of nearly 200 animals each year and lowers his or her risk of suffering from heart disease, strokes, diabetes, obesity, and cancer.

PETA – whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat” – opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. The group offers vegan recipes, ranging from Creamy Leek and Potato Soup with Polenta and Walnut Croutons to Leek, Butter Bean, and Roasted Cauliflower Freekeh Salad, on its website.
