Protesters ‘Caught’ in Fishing Nets Urge Passers-By to Go Vegan

London – Today, to denounce National Seafood Week (4 to 11 October) and give people food for thought about eating aquatic animals, a group of PETA supporters dressed in fish and lobster costumes and draped in fishing nets “gasped for breath” in the middle of London’s Leicester Square. They were surrounded by other trapped “sea animals” – whom the fishing industry callously terms “by-catch” – and signs proclaiming, “Sea Life, Not Seafood”.

“People’s appetite for sea life is causing untold suffering to billions of fish and crustaceans, who are able to feel pain, have emotions, and communicate with each other,” says PETA Senior Campaigns Manager Kate Werner. “PETA is asking kind people to protect aquatic animals of all kinds simply by going vegan.”

Today’s fishing industry kills millions of “non-target” animals every year in addition to the intended targets of fish, who are often crushed to death or gutted alive on the decks of fishing boats. A PETA US investigation of a crustacean abattoir revealed that live lobsters were impaled, torn apart, and decapitated – even as their legs continued to move.

Delicious fish-free fish fingers, vegan fish fillets, and even vegan prawns are all readily available – and they not only are better for animals and the world’s oceans but also offer all the taste without any of the toxins or cholesterol found in cruelly obtained fish flesh.
