PETA Urges TUI to ‘Wipe Away’ Cruelty to Orcas With Bouquet of Loo Roll ‘Flowers
Following the announcement that travel provider TUI has scrapped package holidays, grounded flights, and cancelled cruises, PETA has sent a bouquet of loo roll “flowers” to TUI UK Managing Director Andrew Flintham to urge him to wipe away cruelty to orcas and drop SeaWorld from the company’s travel itineraries for good.
At this time of social distancing, TUI must understand now more than ever how awful it is to confine far-ranging orcas to cramped concrete tanks and separate them from their families. We urge the company to do the right thing by sensitive marine animals and stop selling tickets to SeaWorld’s watery prisons.
Nearly 95,000 PETA members and supporters – including Sharon Osbourne and Andy Murray – have contacted the travel provider to demand that it do the right thing and drop marine parks from its itineraries, as British Airways Holidays and Virgin Holidays have already done.
Orcas Suffer in Captivity
While orcas in nature form complex relationships, work cooperatively to find food, and traverse up to 140 miles of ocean every day, those at SeaWorld are housed in incompatible groups in cramped tanks and have even been given the drug diazepam to manage stress-induced aggressive behaviour. Forty-one orcas and numerous other animals have died on SeaWorld’s watch – far short of their natural life expectancies.
