Score! These UK Sports Venues Serve Vegan Delights

The sports world is going vegan!

Since the release of the documentary The Game Changers, top athletes like cyclist Chris Froome and rugby player Patrick Carrigan have started eating vegan to improve their performance and recovery times.

They join the ranks of strongman Patrik Baboumian, Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton, tennis champion Novak Djokovic, and footballer Chris Smalling, who are all vegan. Sports venues are responding to the demand from fans for plant-based options by adding them to their menus and opening new vegan outlets.

Here are some of PETA’s top picks for stadiums and arenas offering vegan fare.

All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club

The club is home to the international tennis tournament Wimbledon, where, after urging from PETA, vegan strawberries and cream are now served. Ace!

Celtic Park

The biggest stadium in Scotland and home to Celtic FC, Celtic Park has a new vegan pop-up – Hoops & Roots – serving chilli non carne, chickpea and butternut squash curry, and vegan sausage rolls.

Etihad Stadium

Home to Manchester City FC, the Etihad Stadium offers the vegan Garden Gourmet burger on match days. It’s no surprise, as the club’s striker Sergio Agüero and former captain Vincent Kompany are vegan.

Hampden Park

Following the success of its first vegan kiosk, Hampden Park, home of the Scottish national football team, has opened two more! On the menu are vegan pies, sausage rolls, hot dogs, sandwiches, wraps, snacks, and drinks. Vegan options are also available at the majority of other kiosks across the stadium.

Motorpoint Arena Nottingham

This sports and music arena has a new vegan kiosk on the concourse called Vegan Kitchen. It serves delicious vegan kebab, biryani with rice and poppadoms, and vegan meatball subs with cheese. There are also vegan options, including ice cream, available at other kiosks and at the Encore Bar & Grill restaurant.

Stamford Bridge

Home to Chelsea FC, Stamford Bridge recently opened the first fully vegan kiosk at a Premier League football stadium. The menu includes buffalo cauliflower wings, BBQ loaded fries, kebabs, and pizza.

The New Lawn

The home of Forest Green Rovers FC, the world’s first 100% vegan football club, serves satisfying dishes like pizzas, fajitas, pies, and sweet potato fries. The club is powered by renewable energy, has strong eco-friendly policies, and estimates that it’s reached around 2 billion people with its sustainable, animal-friendly message.

The O2

At the iconic sports, music, and exhibition venue in London, visitors can experience the wonderful vegan café by CHLOE. Feast on The Guac Burger, mac ‘n’ cheese, a roast dinner, Niçoise salad, or a smoothie bowl – all vegan! With vegan options at many of the other restaurants at the venue, including Frankie & Benny’s, Las Iguanas, and Zizzi, you’ll be spoiled for choice.

Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

On match days, you can find beer-battered vegan fish and chips, pulled BBQ jackfruit sandwiches, vegan burgers, and tofu katsu curry at several eateries in the stadium. Restaurant The M, open seven days a week, also has vegan options. In a bid to reduce carbon emissions in the run-up to COP26, Spurs fans were encouraged to choose vegan food at the world’s first “net zero” football match.

Not vegan yet? Now’s the time to make the switch. The delicious vegan options listed above show how easy it is to eat vegan wherever you may be and whomever you root for – plus, eating vegan is great for animals, the planet, and your health.
