Trending Right Now: Veganism
Good news, vegans – we’re growing in strength and numbers! Plant-based eating is hitting the zeitgeist: wherever you turn, there’s evidence of rapidly increasing interest in embracing an animal-friendly diet.
Google shows us that the number of people searching for the keyword “vegan” reached a record high in March 2013. The Vegan Society has been flooded with enquiries and reports a 40 percent increase in people pledging to go vegan worldwide. And here at PETA, we’ve seen interest in our vegetarian/vegan starter kit jump up by around a third, just in the past few months!
So why is the movement growing so fast? Factors such as the horsemeat scandal and the burgeoning ranks of vegan celebs – such as Jessica Chastain, Anne Hathaway and Benjamin Zephaniah, just to name a few – have probably played a part. But there’s also a rising tide of awareness about the abysmal conditions on factory farms and the intense suffering of all animals raised for their flesh. Once you know these distressing facts, swearing off the cruelty of animal products is a no-brainer.
This trend is also a tribute to all you beautiful, caring vegans out there who have been setting a shining example and spreading the word about the myriad benefits of this ethically sound, health-enhancing and eco-friendly way of eating.
So to any new vegans, welcome to a more compassionate way of life! And for anyone thinking about changing to animal-free eating, why not sign our 30-Day Vegan Pledge and experience the benefits for yourself?
