SANDRO, MAJE AND CLAUDIE PIERLOT BAN FUR

Following Contact From PETA France, SMCP Has Pledged No Longer to Use Fur Across All Its Brands

London – After being contacted by PETA France, SMCP – which owns French fashion brands SandroMaje, and Claudie Pierlot, and which has 1466 stores in 40 countries – has confirmed that animal fur will no longer feature in any of its collections from January 2020.

“The Sandro brand … has stopped creating designs containing animal fur … a decision stemming from our artistic directors, who are concerned with animal welfare, as am I,” says Isabelle Allouch, CEO of Sandro.

“All our furs are now synthetic,” says Maje.

Claudie Pierlot confirmed on social media that “no more designs using fur will be produced from January 2020”.

“Consumers today want nothing to do with materials obtained from suffering animals who are caged, beaten, and skinned,” says PETA Director Elisa Allen. “By turning their backs on fur, SMCP and its brands made the right decision for animals, the planet, and their clients.”

Exposés released by PETA have shown that on fur farms in Europe, China, and elsewhere, animals are confined to cramped wire cages, denied the opportunity to do anything that’s natural or important to them, and killed by electrocution, neck-breaking, or drowning. In North America, animals are also caught in the wild in steel-jaw traps and left to languish – sometimes for days – before succumbing to hunger, thirst, disease, or attacks by predators or being bludgeoned to death by returning trappers.

PETA – whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to wear” – notes that in recent years, major designers such as Burberry, Chanel, Prada, Gucci, Michael Kors, Versace, and many more have all banned fur from their collections. International fashion events such as Oslo Fashion Week and Amsterdam Fashion Week are also now fur-free, while the entire state of California and several councils in the UK have banned the production and sale of fur.
