All About Animals: Secondary Teachers: Lesson Plan 2: Kentucky Fried Cruelty?

How does this fit into the National Curriculum? Pupils should be taught to research a topical, political, moral, social or cultural issue, problem or event by analysing information from different sources including ICT-based sources (2a).

Teachers’ Note: Read the introduction to your class and ask them to research the issue of chicken farming more fully. They are then to write an article giving their views of the campaign, and whether they think the campaigners are making an important point or just pulling a meaningless stunt.

Animal rights organisation PETA launched a campaign to reveal how chickens who are made into products for Kentucky Fried Chicken are reared and killed. Their Web site www.kentuckyfriedcruelty.com states that they are asking KFC to “eliminate the worst abuses that chickens suffer on factory farms and in the slaughterhouses of its suppliers, including live scalding, life-long crippling, and painful de-beaking.”

Take a look at this Web site and also at KFC’s own Web site (www.kfc.com) to read their statement about their welfare commitment.

Having looked at both sides of this issue, do you believe that campaigners have raised important issues or do you think they are shouting about nothing?
