All About Animals: Secondary Teachers: Lesson Plan 4: The World is Round
How does this fit into the National Curriculum? Pupils should be taught about the concept of the world as a global community, including the implications of people’s actions on the global environment (1i).
Teachers’ Note: Read the introduction to the class and ask them to choose a subject and write an open letter encouraging others to care more about that subject for the sake of the whole planet.
The world is round. Does that sound obvious? The fact that the world is round means that pollution and habitat destruction causes problems for all of us. If the world was flat, then polluted rivers would simply flow over the edge and away but this water is all that the planet has and it’s here to stay. Perhaps we should take better care of our community because the impact we make may be felt by others in far away nations.
Choose one of the following subjects and write an open letter to the people of your community asking them to care about your subject. Be sure to examine the effects that actions in one area can have for people in other areas or countries.
- Global warming
- Water pollution
- Deforestation
- Landfill sites
- Ozone depletion
