Taking Care of the Environment
(Key Stage 1: Science and PSHE)
Rae Phillips from New Mexico in America has a real environmentalist for a cat. Buddy cannot stand a mess and picks up litter everywhere he goes! ‘Every day, he picks up plastic bags, candy wrappers and any other litter behind our house and brings it to us to dispose of,’ says Rae. Sometimes it’s difficult for him to get the litter over the fence as he brings back rubbish bags that are completely full! When the Phillips family go on holiday with their motor home, Buddy goes, too … but doesn’t relax like the rest of his family. Instead, he works hard, clearing up the rubbish left by other campers at the campsite!
Like Buddy, we should all think about taking care of the environment. There are lots of ways we can do this. Picking up litter is just one way. Try and think of nine more ways to help the environment and fill in the chart below. (Hints: Think about how to save water and electricity, improve areas of natural beauty or reduce pollution.)
