Will London’s City Hall Go Vegan? PETA Calls On Mayor Sadiq Khan to Lead by Green Example
PETA has sent a letter to London Mayor Sadiq Khan applauding him for his efforts to make London a more eco-friendly city and suggesting that he put his meals where his mouth is: if City Hall is, as the mayor has said, “doing all [it] can to tackle the global climate emergency”, then that must include serving only vegan food.
As the meat industry is guzzling up our natural resources and spewing greenhouse gases, there can be no such thing as a meat-eating environmentalist.
Khan can set an example for all Londoners by serving only vegan food at City Hall and by going vegan himself, just as Greta Thunberg and Al Gore have done.
PETA has also offered to provide City Hall staff with delicious veggie burgers if its café switches to an all-vegan menu. You can read the letter here.
Why Vegan?
The United Nations states that animal agriculture is responsible for nearly a fifth of human-induced greenhouse-gas emissions – more than all forms of transportation combined. The amount of beef, lamb, and pork consumed in the UK needs to be reduced by an estimated 90% in order to meet Paris Agreement carbon-emission targets – and studies indicate that if everyone went vegan, worldwide food-related greenhouse-gas emissions could be reduced by as much as 70% by 2050.
Going vegan doesn’t just help the planet: in addition to decreasing their carbon footprint and sparing the lives of nearly 200 animals every year, each person who goes vegan reduces their risk of suffering from heart disease, diabetes, cancer, obesity, and other health conditions.
