WIMBLEDON TO SERVE STRAWBERRIES AND VEGAN CREAM
After Hearing From PETA, World-Renowned Tennis Tournament Adds Plant-Based Version of Iconic Dessert
London – This summer, visitors looking to get a flavour of Wimbledon’s Grand Slam Championship are in for a treat: strawberries and vegan cream are now on the menu. The cruelty-free twist on the traditional offering is testament to the ever-growing demand for vegan fare, and that’s not the only exciting addition – Wimbledon is also acing its ice cream selection with vegan options available for attendees.
“PETA first urged Wimbledon to offer strawberries and vegan cream in 2017, and we’re delighted to make a racquet about the new cruelty-free treat,” says PETA Director of Vegan Projects Dawn Carr. “Vegan cream is not only packed with flavour and kinder to animals and the environment but also a healthier alternative for tennis fans to enjoy in the heat.”
PETA – whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat” – opposes speciesism, which is a human-supremacist worldview. The group notes that vegan treats are not only free of saturated animal fat and cholesterol but also kind to mother cows on dairy farms, who are artificially impregnated and then separated from their newborn calves shortly after birth so that their milk can be consumed by humans instead. When their milk production wanes, they’re sent to slaughter.
These won’t be the only animal-friendly changes at centre court, as some players will be wearing high-tech vegan kit made with recycled plastic and designed especially for Wimbledon by Stella McCartney.
