Brexit and Animal Protection: Help Us Get a #BetterDealForAnimals
Under the Lisbon Treaty, animals in the EU are recognised as sentient beings whose welfare must be protected – but because of Brexit, those in the UK are in danger of losing that legal protection. This could mean that new British laws, policies, and trade deals fail to take into account their needs.
Pigs are clever animals who are also friendly, loyal, and intelligent. Cows interact in socially complex ways, developing strong friendships over time. And chickens can distinguish among more than 100 faces of members of their species.
So what do these unique individuals have in common? They all suffer every day on factory farms across the UK – where they’re raised in squalor and their babies are torn away from them. As a result of Brexit, even more misery could lie ahead for them – unless we take action now. Although the government recently stated that it’s “committed to making any necessary changes required to UK law in a rigorous and comprehensive way to ensure animal sentience is recognised after the UK leaves the EU”, it has yet to introduce any legislation to meet this commitment, meaning animals are still at risk. Don’t Let Animals Become Victims of Brexit
Together with 35 other animal-protection organisations, PETA is calling for the establishment of an independent Animal Welfare Advisory Council to advise government ministers on animal issues.
