Man’s ‘Skin’ Torn Off to Highlight Suffering of Animals Killed for Leather

A man had his “skin” torn off – with the help of special-effects make-up – in front of shoppers in central Stockholm today to call attention to the suffering endured by animals in the leather industry.

Every leather jacket, pair of shoes, and sofa is the result of the horrific suffering and terrifying death of sensitive animals. Millions of cows whose skin is turned into leather endure dehorning and castration, often without painkillers. A PETA exposé of the world’s largest leather processor revealed that the company brands calves on the face and electroshocks and beats gentle cows and bulls.

Turning animal skins into leather requires 130 different chemicals, including cyanide, and people who work in or live near tanneries are exposed to these toxins. Animal agriculture, which includes the leather industry, is also responsible for 51 per cent of all greenhouse-gas emissions.
