7 Vegan Pies for British Pie Week
Today marks the start of British Pie Week, and to kick things off, we’ve pulled together a list of our favourite vegan pies – from the classic “steak” and gravy variety to the much-loved creamy mushroom option.
1. Linda McCartney Foods Vegetarian Country Pies
If you’re looking for a vegan take on the steak pie, these country pies by Linda McCartney are perfect. They’re packed with soya pieces and a rich onion and “beef” gravy, giving them the traditional taste and texture with none of the cruelty. These can be picked up at most major supermarkets.
2. Fry Family Food Meat Free Pepper Steak Style Pies
These hearty, “meaty” pies are filled with a peppery gravy and Fry’s famous steak-style pieces – they’re perfect with a side of mash and vegetables. They can be found in various supermarkets, including Morrisons and Ocado, as well as at Holland & Barrett.
3. Clive’s Creamy Mushroom Classic Pie
If you fancy something a bit creamier, we recommend Clive’s wholemeal mushroom pie. This bestseller is filled with brown chestnut and porcini mushrooms and a creamy herb sauce. It can be picked up from your local health food shop, Holland & Barrett, or Ocado.
4. Pieminister Kevin
Bristol-based family business Pieminister is now offering a delicious vegan pie filled with mushrooms, tomatoes, baby onions, red wine, and thyme. You can order one from the company’s website for delivery across the UK, or pick one up from Waitrose or Ocado.
5. VBites Meat-Free Beef & Horseradish Pie
Famed for its impressive line of award-winning vegan foods, VBites offers several tasty pies. Our favourite is this combination of “beef”, horseradish, and country vegetables in crisp pastry. It can be bought from the company website or in Holland & Barrett.
6. Fry Family Food Mutton-Style Curry Pies
Another Fry’s favourite of ours is this delicious curry pie. Cased in a light puff pastry, it’s stuffed with protein-rich chunks and vegetables in an authentic curry sauce.
7. Young Vegans
If you are based in London and don’t fancy cooking, why not head over to Young Vegans at Camden Market? The shop offers a huge variety of meat-free fillings, such as chickpea curry and seitan “steak” and ale. And if you’re in the mood for something sweet, check out the peanut butter and chocolate mud pies. If you’re not in the capital, don’t worry! You can also order the pies online to heat up at home.
*****
Farmed animals have feelings, thoughts, and personalities, just as humans do, yet the food industry treats them like machines, with cruelty that’s hard to swallow. Fortunately, there are so many delicious vegan options available that it’s easier than ever to leave animal “products” off your plate.
