Revealed: 1.35 Million British Chickens Died on the Way to Slaughter in Just 15 Months
Shocking new figures have revealed that 1.35 million chickens died on the way to slaughter in the UK in just 15 months. This horrifying statistic is further proof of the suffering that results when animals are treated as products rather than living, feeling beings.
The figures, obtained by i and The Bureau of Investigative Journalism, show that the chickens died either during transport or before being slaughtered at abattoirs over a 15-month period between 2016 and 2017.
Many chickens suffocated after being crammed into transportation crates so tightly that they couldn’t even breathe, while other deaths were linked to stress and trauma as a result of rough handling. Another contributing factor was likely that chickens on factory farms are bred and fed to grow so unnaturally large that their bodies can’t support their weight, making them prone to lameness and heart disease.
Footage filmed at an East London Chicken Save vigil and released by PETA earlier this month shows chickens arriving for slaughter at an abattoir. More than 5,000 birds were crammed into a single lorry, packed into stacked crates and covered in each other’s waste. They’d been on the road for at least 8 hours, travelling through the night in the freezing cold with nothing but a violent death awaiting them at the end of their journey.
